Ford wanted to do this by owning the whole process, even the rubber production, and the rubber plantations.
The concept is good, implementation is not easy, and competition offers challenges. Apple also almost went bust when it had too many products to sell, and Steve Jobs cut most of these when he was brought back after being fired. Steve jobs also spent way too much money on his 'pet' plant/factory in California - when he wanted to own the production ecosystem. Apple now outsources its production.
